Position Summary

We are seeking a motivated and dependable Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator in Training (OIT) to join our operations team. This entry-level position is ideal for individuals interested in building a long-term career in wastewater treatment and environmental services. Under the supervision of certified operators, OIT will assist with the operation, maintenance, monitoring, and repair of wastewater treatment facilities and equipment while working toward state operator certification.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist certified operators in daily plant operations and process monitoring
  • Collect wastewater samples and perform basic laboratory testing
  • Record operational data and maintain accurate logs and reports
  • Monitor pumps, motors, valves, chemical feed systems, and related equipment
  • Assist with preventive maintenance and minor repairs
  • Respond to alarms, operational issues, and emergency situations as needed
  • Maintain cleanliness and safety standards throughout the facility
  • Follow all local, state, and federal environmental regulations
  • Participating in training programs and certification coursework
  • Current state issued Class C Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one upon hire.
  • CPR/First Aid card or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire date.
  • Traffic Flagger Certification or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire date.
  • Confined Space Entry Safety Awareness Certification or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire date.
  • Oregon Wastewater Level I Certification or the ability to obtain within eighteen (18) months of hire date.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record
  • Ability to obtain a Wastewater Operator-in-Training certification within one year
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn technical systems
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Must reside within 30 minutes of the Treatment Plant

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in utilities, construction, mechanical maintenance, or industrial operations
  • Basic knowledge of pumps, motors, electrical systems, or laboratory procedures
  • Existing Operator-in-Training certification preferred but not required

Physical Requirements

  • This position involves frequent standing, sitting, reaching, and handling tools and equipment. Work requires mobility over varied terrain and the ability to lift and move materials up to 60 pounds. Duties include operating light equipment and using hand and power tools such as weed trimmers, brush cutters, chainsaws, and shovels. Manual dexterity and coordination are essential.

Vision Requirements: 

  • Close and distance vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus are necessary for safe and effective performance.

Work Environment: 

  • Approximately 75% of work occurs outdoors in all weather conditions, including rain, snow, ice, heat, and cold, with temperatures ranging from 0°F to over 100°F. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

Additional Information:
Must be available for rotating 24-hour on-call duty and live within 30 minutes of the worksite.
